People that apply to SWRT have lots of experience in variety of fields useful to the team.
These fields are not necessarily directly related to animal welfare. SWRT has quite a few members who work in non-animal welfare employment.
Having computer skills or being a joiner, plumber is something we would look for, but not necessarily something people would think to put on their application. Whatever it is you are good at - make sure you let us know because there is probably a way the team can make use of your skills.
Volunteer animal care positions are open to those individuals over 16yrs of age who wish to get hands on experience in the care of sick, injured & orphaned British wildlife.
Duties include food preparation, animal feeding, assisting in medical procedures, facility up-keep and cleaning.
There are normally two care shifts each day: morning & afternoon.
Depending on the number of patients, the lengths of shifts will vary. Shift lengths may be as short as 3 hours at some times and as long as 4 hours at other times. Summer shifts generally operate at 4 hour lengths due to the large number of orphaned or sick animals being nursed.
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to regular animal care shifts and are responsible for contacting SWRT to roster them. If you miss shifts for more than one month, you will need to re-apply for a position and come in for an orientation update.
Animal Rescue Volunteers who wish to become involved in animal rescue must complete our six month training program and upon successful completion of the course will be placed on our call out database. Duties will entail traveling to wildlife incidents/ stranding sites, gathering and relaying animal health assessment information to our vet, rescuing injured /stranded animals and transporting them, or assisting with the relocation of healthy animals found in populated areas. If you think you would like to become either an Animal Care or Support member please complete and return our membership application form which you will find as an attached file at the bottom of this page. Please Note! Becoming a member of SWRT does not guarantee a position on our Animal Care / Animal Rescue volunteer program.
