Wildlife Casualties Page 2

This cygnet mute swan was recovered from Broughty Ferry, Dundee. We received a call from the Dundee Council Rangers Service informing us that the bird had crash landed in the Castle Green children's play park and as a result had an injury to its leg which prevented it from gaining enough speed for a take off. Our duty team attended and recovered the bird to our veterinary for examination.
Here we see a baby grey squirrel which along with two siblings were handed into us by a tree surgeon who had accidently disturbed the nest when felling branches from a tree.  These little ones, which are only days old, need to be fed a milk formula at least five times a day.
This nosey little hedgehog was recovered from Montrose in Angus after being found out during the day (ODD). As the hog was infested with ticks and fleas and weighing only 425g it was decided that it should be given treatment and accommodation over the winter months.
This Gull which was found grounded on the foreshore at Tenstsmuir enjoys a couple of days B&B at our facility in Dundee. We are pleased to say it made a full recovery and was released after spending five days with us.
This Tawny Owl with a fractured wing was recovered from Tayport in Fife. The bird was found grounded in the local caravan park. After having its wing xrayed by our vet it was taken to our wildlife care unit at Dundee where the wing was strapped up with vet rap and settled into a cage for rest and rehabilitation. The owl has now been transfered for specialised care at Hessilhead Wildlife Hospital.
Our team were dispatched to Broughty Ferry beach, Dundee where they found this juvenile Grey seal which as you can see is very thin weighing only 14kg with wounds to it's fore flippers and infection in both eyes. The animal was given rehydration and wounds bathed. Arrangements were made and our team transported the seal to the SSPCA Seal unit where it will be given expert care.
After an oil spill on the North East coast of Fife many birds including this male eider duck were taken into the SSPCA Oiled Bird Cleaning Unit at Inverkeithing Fife and given an initial wash by our wildlife rescue technician Gareth who had received oiled bird cleaning training whilst employed as deputy manager of the SSPCA Milddlebank centre.
This little weasel which weighed only 50g on admission was recovered from Perthshire where it had been found in a horse exercise paddock. Luckily the caring animal lover called us in order for the animal to be brought in for intensive care. Our wildlife rescue technician Michelle Penny became 'mum' giving the creature goat milk feeds every four hours and refilling a water bottle in order to keep it warm and comfortable.
Its now fourteen days since the little weasel pictured above and to the left was admitted and as you can see thanks to Michelle's care it is doing very well eating a diet of chopped rabbit, liver, meat cat food and drinking water. We have now reduced human contact to a minimum to prevent imprinting to humans The animal will be given a soft release back in the area in which it was recovered.
